How Hypnotherapy Helps You Stop Overthinking Everything

By Tina, Clinical Nurse Hypnotherapist & Coach

If you’ve ever found yourself lying awake at 2am replaying a conversation from three days ago, or mentally drafting ten different versions of an email you haven’t even sent yet, or catastrophising about something that hasn’t even happened. Welcome my friend you’re in good company. Overthinking is practically a national hobby at this point.

Overthinking isn’t just a habit, it’s a survival strategy you learned somewhere along the way. You think ahead, anticipate, plan,  and prepare. As you try to prevent things going wrong. It makes sense… until it doesn’t.

What Overthinking Actually Looks Like

Overthinking isn’t just “thinking too much.” It’s thinking in circles. It’s thinking without landing and it drains your energy instead of helping you make a decision. It might show up as, replaying conversations on a loop or worrying about things that haven’t happened. Imagining worst‑case scenarios like it’s your side hustle, analysing every tiny detail, second‑guessing yourself even when you know you’re right and the best of all mentally preparing for outcomes that are wildly unlikely. Well I’m pleased to tell you although it’s exhausting, it’s not your fault.

Why We Become Overthinkers

Most overthinkers didn’t choose the role we learned to overthink because:

  • you were praised for being careful and thorough

  • you grew up in environments where mistakes felt unsafe

  • you’ve been responsible for other people’s wellbeing

  • you’re used to being the one who anticipates problems

  • your nervous system has been running on high alert for years

Overthinking is your mind trying to protect you, it just isn’t very good at choosing the right moments.

How Coaching and Hypnotherapy Helps You Switch Off the Noise

Hypnotherapy doesn’t magically delete your thoughts (if only). What it does do is help your mind slow down enough to separate real concerns from the imaginary ones your brain likes to invent at 3am.

It creates a quieter internal space where your thoughts can settle instead of spiralling. People often tell me after sessions they feel calmer and less reactive, more able to make decisions without over‑analysing. Less stuck in “what if” thinking and more connected to their body (which is usually calmer than their mind). They talk about being clearer about what actually matters and less pulled into other people’s urgency

It’s gentle, it’s practical, and it helps your nervous system stop acting like a smoke alarm that goes off every time someone makes toast.

A Little Honesty

I’m not immune to overthinking either. I’ve had my fair share of imaginary arguments, unnecessary worry spirals, and “Did I sound weird when I said that?” moments. But the more I work with coaching and hypnotherapy, the more I see how much calmer life feels when your mind stops sprinting ahead of you.

A Gentle Invitation

If your brain has been doing the mental equivalent of running a marathon in flip‑flops, you’re welcome to explore how hypnotherapy or coaching might help you soften the noise. No pressure, just space. Here’s a link if you want to wander towards it: gentle coaching www.thedevoncoach.co.uk

For This Week

Catch one moment of overthinking, take a breath, and ask yourself: “Is this actually happening, or is this just my brain being dramatic?”
